Many baby bedding sets include crib bumper pads, but the question is…are they safe to use in the crib? Recently the American Academy of Pediatrics released a report about safe sleep practices for babies stating “Bumper pads should not be used in cribs. There is no evidence that bumper pads prevent injuries, and there is a potential risk of suffocation, strangulation or entrapment.”

We feel that crib bumpers, when used correctly, are safe (and look awesome) but it is really up to YOU to decide what is right for your baby. Many of our baby bedding sets come with crib bumpers, but if you choose not to put the bumper in the crib you’re in luck. There happens to be many other unique ways to use the crib bumper in a baby’s nursery and I’ve listed five of those below.

1. You can tie the crib bumper to the outside, bottom of the crib for a unique look and under-the-crib coverage.

2. The crib bumper can be used as a window valance. Build a wooden valance piece that fits the top of the window. Cut the crib bumper to fit and staple it around the edges of the wooden valance. Hang it up and voila…your nursery will look more complete since you will have added the beautiful baby bedding pattern above the window as well.

3. Use the crib bumper as protective padding around your coffee table or fireplace hearth.

4. Transform the crib bumper into cute seat cushions or floor cushions for your child’s reading area. Simply cut the bumper into sections and sew them together to create a square cushion then place it where it will be enjoyed most.

5. Change the crib bumper into a play mat for your baby. Pull out a needle, thread and scissors and cut the crib bumper pad into sections. Then stitch the sections together to create a padded play mat for your baby that will look darling with the matching baby bedding set.

If you’re looking for a crib bedding set for your baby’s nursery check out our huge selection at SimplyBabyFurniture.com.

New moms beware…here are six mistakes that even great moms can make. Follow these tips and your baby will be extra healthy and safe!

1. Don’t Share a Bed with Baby

There’s lots of time throughout the day when you and your baby can bond, but bedtime isn’t the right time. For your baby’s safety you should always make sure he/she sleeps in a crib or bassinet. If you really can’t stand having your baby in another room, consider getting a co-sleeper that allows your baby to sleep by your bedside. This way there’s no way you can roll over on your baby in the middle of the night!

2. Never Give Baby a Bottle in the Crib

If your baby has a bottle in the crib at night with juice or milk, that’s a sure way to guarantee cavities in the future. Believe it or not, if a child sips milk or juice throughout the night the cavity-causing bacteria in his/her little mouth can transform sugars into tooth-decaying acid.

3. Never Buy Second Hand Baby Furniture or Toys with Multiple Parts

You never know if used baby furniture or toys have been recalled or if they’ve been so overused that there are faulty parts that could cause harm to your cutie pie. This is why it’s a smart idea to always go with new baby items that meet today’s safety standards.

4. Don’t Put your Baby in the Shopping Cart Basket

Babies aren’t very balanced and it’s a known fact that thousands of children go to the emergency room every year because of falling out of shopping carts. If you have to shop with your child then look for a shopping cart that has a low seat with safety strap or carry your baby in one of those baby carriers that’s like a back pack.

5. Never Leave Your Child Alone in the Car

Believe it or not a car can heat up to high temps in just 10 minutes and this can be dangerous and sometimes deadly to a child. This is why you should never leave a baby in the car for any reason.

6. Don’t Leave Your Baby’s Side While He/She’s in the Bath

Unfortunately a baby can drown in a very small amount of water, so it’s important to always be in arm’s reach of your baby or toddler when he/she is bathing. You should also baby proof the bathtub, so your child can’t slip and fall, helping to avoid all possibilities of injury.

You’ve probably heard the expression…parenting can be like a roller coaster…and boy is that the truth! Everything happens so quickly. You go from morning sickness, to your baby’s arrival to bonding through breast or bottle feeding and by six months your baby is ready to start trying solid foods.

When it’s time for your baby to take his first “bite” it can be a fun time or overwhelming moment depending on YOU. If you stay calm and go slowly you and your baby will have a ball experimenting with new foods. You’ll get to see your baby’s excitement when he tastes something he loves or you’ll laugh when he makes funny faces when trying squash or spinach for the first time.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that moms keep babies on a liquid diet until the baby reaches six months of age and that’s when parents can start to introduce their baby to more solid foods. Other facts show that babies can be ready for solids between the ages of 4 to 6 months, so it’s really up to you.

Step One: Introducing Baby to Solid Foods

Sit your baby up right and always use a spoon. Start with a simple, bland rice cereal (specifically for babies) mixed with breast milk or baby formula, so your baby’s taste buds don’t get blasted with too much flavor for the first time. Decrease the amount of milk you add as the days go by to see how your baby does on more solid food. After a few weeks you can introduce additional baby foods like meat, vegetables and fruits.

Step Two: Introducing Baby to Meats, Vegetables and Fruits

Consider starting with meats since they’re more bland than fruits and veggies. Always use soft, baby food from jars or homemade baby food that has been pureed. Give your baby one new food at a time and try that food for at least three days before introducing your baby to another. Watch your cutie for any signs of food allergies like diaper rash, diarrhea or gas. Start by giving your baby solid foods once a day and work up to three times a day along with giving breast milk or formula.

Step Three: Introducing Baby to Bite Size Snacks

After your baby has gotten used to eating more solid foods and gets on a regular meal schedule, then you can introduce him to bite size “soft” snacks that he can pick up and feed himself. Also, give him the spoon once in a while and let him give it a try, but remember to put on his bib, because things can get quite messy during baby mealtime!

October 5, 2011
Release #12-003 Firm’s Recall Hotline: (877) 806-8190
CPSC Recall Hotline: (800) 638-2772
CPSC Media Contact: (301) 504-7908

Yu Wei Recalls Drop-Side Cribs Sold Exclusively at jcpenney Due to Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Drop-Side Cribs
Units: About 8,000
Importer: J. C. Penney Purchasing Corp., of Plano, Texas
Manufacturer: Yu Wei Co. Ltd., of Taipei, Taiwan

Hazard: The drop-side rails on the crib can malfunction, detach or unexpectedly fall down, causing part of the drop side to fall out of position. When this happens, a space is created into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged or entrapped, which can lead to strangulation or suffocation. A child can also fall out of the crib. Drop-side incidents can also occur due to incorrect assembly and due to age-related wear and tear.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and the firms are aware of nine incidents involving drop side rails that malfunctioned or detached, including one report of a child who sustained minor abrasions to the arm.

Description: This recall involves Yu Wei full-size cribs sold under the Scroll and Lauren model names. The cribs were sold in antique white, pecan and dark cherry, and have the following model numbers and date codes listed on the inside of the crib’s end panels.
Model #	Description	Date Code Between
343-8225	Scroll Crib	01/2006-12/2010
343-9117	Lauren Crib	01/2007-12/2010

Sold at: jcpenney.com and in the jcpenney catalog from January 2006 through December 2010 for between $300 and $450.
Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and contact Yu Wei to get a free immobilizer kit that will immobilize the drop side. In the meantime, parents are encouraged to find an alternate, safe sleep environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard or toddler bed depending on your child’s age.

Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact Yu Wei at (877) 806-8190 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s website at www.yuweicribrecalls.com . Consumers can also email the firm at yuweiparts@aol.com to order a free immobilizer kit.

Important Message from CPSC: CPSC reminds parents not to use any crib with missing, broken or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for parts separating that can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib. Babies have died in cribs where repairs were attempted by caregivers. Crib age is a factor in safety. At a minimum, CPSC staff recommends that you do not use a crib that is older than 10 years old. Effective June 28, 2011, new, mandatory federal crib rules require that all cribs manufactured and sold after that date must meet new and improved safety requirements (pdf). Older cribs do not meet the new standard and can have a variety of safety problems. Check if your crib has been recalled at www.cpsc.gov

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is still interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to this product recall or involve a different hazard with the same product. Please tell us about your experience with the product on www.saferproducts.gov

CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of the thousands of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $900 billion annually. CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard. CPSC’s work to ensure the safety of consumer products – such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals – contributed to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.

Under federal law, it is illegal to attempt to sell or resell this or any other recalled product.
To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury, go online to: www.saferproducts.gov, call CPSC’s Hotline at (800) 638-2772 or teletypewriter at (800) 638-8270 for the hearing impaired.

When you’re having a baby everything seems right with the world. You get lots of attention and you get to bond with that cute, wiggly baby that’s inside your belly. Then the big day gets here and your baby arrives and you’re loving those precious first moments in the hospital room when nurses are there to help you out and motherhood seems like such a blessing.

Then you take your baby home and reality sets in. No one mentions that you’ll be changing a gazillion diapers throughout the day; washing unexpected baby messes constantly and trying to calm your little darling when she’s screaming for absolutely no reason, or so it seems.

This is the time that most new moms start to lose it! They cry a little, call their friends and ask for advice, start to doubt their ability to be a good mom and get the baby blues. The good thing is that if this is happening to you…you’re not alone! Another good thing is that there are things you can do to help make motherhood a little easier during those first few crazy months.

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule!

First important thing to do is to put your baby on a schedule. Remember, you brought your baby into your life and she needs to adapt to it, not the other way around. So take some control and create a daily nap and feeding schedule for your baby.

The easiest way to do this is to observe your precious newborn. She’ll most likely start to suck on her hand or fingers when she’s hungry, so feed her and write down the times when she had each meal throughout the day. Later, when your baby starts to get cranky she’s most likely tired, so that’s the time to put her in for her morning nap. Keep track of her typical feeding and napping times for one week then decide on a good schedule. Important Fact: Babies need a lot of sleep because their brains are developing at a very fast pace, so a baby from birth to 6 months may need to take 2 – 4 naps during the day. A baby will usually sleep from 2 – 4 hours during those naps and if your baby’s snoozing, don’t wake her up. She needs all the rest she can get in those earlier months.

Once you learn your baby’s triggers, creating that schedule should be easy. You might want to consider napping when your baby does, so that you’re not too tired out from those late night feedings.

Take Time for Yourself

Moms and dads need to remember that they still need to take some time for themselves, both together and separate. Consider finding a babysitter who you trust, like a family friend, aunt or grandma and do a date night with your spouse at least once a month. It’s also smart for each parent to take at least one night a week where they do their own thing: like dinner with a friend, visit to the gym, walk in a park etc… Realizing that your life doesn’t end when your baby arrives will keep you sane through the tough times.

Be Prepared Before Heading Out on the Town with Baby

When you decide to venture out to a restaurant or a friend’s house with your baby it’s important to be prepared. Get a diaper bag and make sure it’s packed with plenty of diapers, formula, bottles, bibs, burp cloths, rattle or baby toy, pacifier, music box, baby blanket, extra onesie, changing pad, wipes, plastic bags with ziplock for dirty diaper disposal.

When preparing that diaper bag think about everything your baby may need during your time away from home and be prepared in advance. This makes day trips with your baby so much easier. Hot tip: Keeping a bag of diapers and wipes in your car is a great idea. That way if you use the last one in your diaper bag you always have extras close by.

When All Else Fails Turn on the Tunes

The final tip on staying sane as a new mom is enjoying the gift of music. If your child is cranky sing him a song or turn on some soft tunes and hold him close and dance. If you’re cranky turn on your favorite CD, take some deep breaths and give yourself a few minutes to listen to your favorite songs to rejuvenate yourself back into a happy mood, so you’re ready to enjoy your day with your precious baby.
